The rapid antigen test can directly detect the causative agent of COVID-19, the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It detects the proteins of the virus (the antigens). These can be found in pharyngeal swabs when the virus is replicating there. The rapid antigen test is therefore similar to the PCR test, particularly sensitive in the initial phase of the infection. Similar to the PCR test, it can also indicate a virus infection before symptoms appear.
